How to get the text out of a Word document
- Select Choose file and pick a .docx document.
- Select Extract text.
- Read the result under Text from your document, then select Copy text or download it as a .txt file.
Good to know
- Works with .docx files up to 25 MB, one at a time. The text file keeps the document's name, so report.docx becomes report.txt.
- Paragraphs, list items and table cells come out in document order, with a blank line between paragraphs. Table columns aren't lined up, and bullets or list numbers may not appear.
- Fonts, bold and italic, images and page layout are dropped. Page headers and footers aren't included.
- Text that's part of a picture, such as a scanned page pasted into the document, can't be read. There's no text recognition (OCR).
- Old .doc files and password-protected documents can't be opened, and you'll see a message saying which it is.

How do I copy text from a Word file without the formatting?

My file ends in .doc. What can I do?
Only the newer .docx format is supported. Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and try again.
Can I use a Google Docs document?
Yes. In Google Docs, choose File, then Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx), and open that file here. Google Docs can also download plain text directly from the same menu.
Why is my table text on separate lines?
Plain text has no columns, so each table cell becomes its own line, in reading order from left to right and top to bottom.
