How to compress an image
- Choose one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images.
- For JPG and WebP, choose a quality. Lower quality means a smaller file.
- Select Compress, compare the original with the result, and download.
Good to know
- JPG and WebP files are re-saved at the quality you choose. The format and pixel size stay the same.
- PNG files are compressed without any loss: every pixel stays identical. Savings are usually smaller.
- If an image is already well optimized and doesn't get smaller, you get the original back unchanged.
- Results vary a lot between images. The exact before and after sizes are shown for each file.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser does the work on your device. Your images are not sent to Filecon's servers.
Is photo information like location kept?
Resized images, and compressed JPG and WebP images, are newly encoded pixels, so hidden details such as GPS location are not copied. Photos are turned the right way up first. Losslessly compressed PNG files keep their original structure.
Why didn't my PNG get much smaller?
Lossless compression can only find a more efficient way to store the same pixels. Photos saved as PNG become far smaller if converted to JPG or WebP instead.
